Cardi B inspired this post. Yes. You read that correctly. Cardi B. I draw inspiration from a lot of powerful women and some happen to be very different from me. Over the years feminism has changed and can take many forms. I see feminism by it’s core definition. Which is “the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes”. When it comes to women empowerment, I always give the example of, ‘if one woman chooses to dress more sexy. It is her choice. If she choices to dress more modest. It is her choice.’ The key word is ‘choice’. In Cardi B’s new album, she touches on various topics like women uplifting one another to women making their own money and not depending on anyone. Cardi B like many artists are speaking on women empowerment (even though it is in an unconventional way). My only fear is that this does not become solely a trend. I want the concept of empowering women to be a constant and not a trend. An example is Drake’s new music video for ‘nice for what’ featuring numerous ambiguous, intelligent and talented women. When watching that video I was smiling a little too hard at my screen because it brought me so much joy. Pop culture is definitely taking a turn. I see more images of women portrayed in a better light than in the past. Don’t get me wrong, there are still many songs and videos that disrespect women but I sense a change. Although, I hope the change is here to stay.
